EXCERPT FROM CHASING LOVE:

A tall, lean, ride-em-cowboy slid into the empty stool to my left. With my eyes cast down, I glanced at his shiny boots and tight denim jeans—narrow at the hem and all the way up his muscular thighs. My heart rate sped and a lonely ache thrummed against my rib cage. Yep, too long without a man.
It struck me at that moment; most women looking for a tumble in the sheets would detect a hot, moist sensation between their legs, a normal precursory to fucking.  Yet all I could think of was his strong arms holding me, the sound of a his heart beating in sync with mine, and his warm breath against my ear. Perhaps the doc is right. It isn’t about the physical joining of bodies for me, but the fusion of hearts, of minds. I’d journeyed down the same road all my life, walked a never-ending path of a lost soul looking for acceptance and devotion.

“You counting the hairs on my forearm?” the clear, resonant voice said.

I drew my gaze from his arm and looked into his eyes. Blue. Bluer than a cloudless sky at morning. “Sorry, I drifted there for a minute.”

“You are one, aren’t you . . . a drifter? I mean, not born and raised in Clarence?”

“No, not born in Iowa. I’m from New York, here visiting my aunt Pearl.”

“Pearl,your aunt is Pearl Waldron?”

I nodded.

“Buried her husband not long ago.”

“My uncle Max, yes.”

“My condolences,” he said, extending his hand. “Name is Cleve, Cleve Porter.”

I felt my lips twitch into a smile. “Cleve from Clarence. I like it. It has a . . . a homey, wholesome ring to it.”

Straight, white teeth smiled back. “That’s us, wholesome top to bottom.”

I liked him, and he looked into my eyes as if the feeling could be mutual. Here’s where the old nagging self-doubt walked in. Maybe like all the rest in my past, he wanted sex—sweaty, one-night bliss. Nothing more. Oh, I couldn’t think about that now. I wanted that instant gratification too. But one could hope something between us would ignite, spark a desire to meet again. And again.

I pushed the conflicting thoughts from my mind, had to hope Doc Tenwyck was wrong, that sometimes one-night-stands led to long-term affairs of the heart. Time to find out. Never one to stand on pretense, having learned long ago to ask for what I wanted upfront, I drew a silent, deep breath. “So Cleve, you live near by?”

The bartender dropped a newspaper onto the shiny bar in front of Cleve, smothering his answer to my question. “That makes four, or is it five now?” the man said. “Iowa City has one sick son of a bitch on their hands.”

I looked at the headlines and an icy chill ran down my spine. Another Woman Found Dead Along County Road.

Cleve looked up from the newspaper. ““What does a man have to do to get a beer around here?”

“Sorry, Cleve, had a little run on thirst for a minute. The usual?”

Cleve nodded.

The bartender returned with his beer and I spit out the questions hanging on my tongue. “How do they know the killer lives in Iowa City? Have they got a suspect?”

“They don’t know,” Cleve interjected. “And that’s why they don’t have any suspects. Most of the cops in this neck of the woods struggled through Criminology 101.”

“Ah, that’s not fair, man,” the bartender said with a frown. “They’re dealing with a professional, a serial killer who’s been plying his trade for years.”

My mouth went dry and I swallowed, hard. “What is his trade?”

“Knives,” the bartender said. “He likes to carve up his victims before he puts their lights out.”

My stomach flipped. I’d had enough of death and dying; didn’t want to spend my night out on the town talking about knives and serial killers. In fact, the entire conversation had sapped my prior thoughts of passion and love.

I dug in my purse for my billfold and keys, dropped a five-dollar bill on the bar and turned to Cleve. “I best get going. Aunt Pearl will start worrying soon.”
After sliding from the stool, I started for the entrance and called out over my shoulder. “Nice to meet you.”

Before I made it to the truck, footsteps fell behind me. “Wait up a second.”

I drew a deep breath and turned to face Cleve.

“Sorry ‘bout all that talk of killers and knives. Sort of spooked ya, huh?” He took a few steps toward me, his adorable smile calming my rattled nerves. A bronze hand came out and warm fingers stroked my cheek. “Before all that stupid talk, you asked me where I lived, and I didn’t have a chance to answer you.”

“I did . . . but I think―”

“Don’t think. Just go with your gut feeling. You came into Clarence for a reason, and I don’t think it was for a glass of beer. Besides, you look more like a wine lady to me. Am I right?”

God, he was a smooth talker, and the most handsome men I’d seen in eons. Under an umbrella of bright stars, the blue eyes sparkled like shiny gems. “You’re right about the wine. I do prefer Chablis over beer.”

“I live two miles from here. Come home with me.”

I crooked my neck to the right and looked at him in a new light. His face was all manly angles and planes—high cheekbones, straight nose and strong jaw. The bartender knew him, which meant he wasn’t a loner passing through town. I wanted him, longed to have those strong, tan arms holding me, those lush lips nibbling on my ear and whispering sweet words of love. Even if the words weren’t true, I could pretend for one night. Just one night. I needed a man, yearned to belong to another human being if only for a short time.

He must have sensed my hesitation. “Let’s cut to the chase. You want me. I see it in your eyes.” He nodded toward the bar. “I saw it in your eyes back there too.
And God knows, I want you.” He cupped my face in his hands. “Let it go, all other thoughts and worries. Just for tonight.”

Just for tonight. The words acted like a balm to my troubled soul. “All right, just for tonight,” I said with a tentative smile.

“Follow me, and stay close. The deer are running this time of night.”

“Right,” I said. “Close.”

SETUP AND EXCERPT:
Derek escorts Raine into the sitting room. He's about to propose a business arrangement, a very decadent, wicked arrangement. Raine wants to return to her grandfather in Maine, but doesn't have a cent to her name. Derek desires a son, and believes the plan he's been mulling over will benefit both parties.
* * *
Derek dropped into an overstuffed chair opposite Raine, pulled the leather pouch and brown envelope from his vest pocket, and placed them on the oak table separating them. Alternately, she looked between the pouch and his face.
"I'm not certain how to begin." He wrung his clammy hands. Damn, this is more difficult than I imaged. "We had a discussion several evenings past in the garden?”
"I remember.”
"I explained my father’s desire to obtain a male heir and my inability to produce one thus far?”
Dark green eyes searched his. "Yes, clearly.”
"You're a beautiful woman with a significant amount of intellect and a variety of coveted traits and talents."
"Thank you, but you hardly know me."
"That's true." Somehow the words slipped out his dry throat. “But what I've seen since your arrival exceeds my highest expectations."
"Expectations?"
"You're in a difficult situation.” He forced a smile. "And I'm prepared to offer you a way out."
"A way out of what, Derek? I’m not understanding―"
"Hear me out, please." Rising from the chair, he paced before her. "I realize the arrangement will seem outrageous at first, even obtuse, but I've thought a great deal about it since our meeting in the garden. I took the liberty of consulting an expert."
"An expert? Whatever for?”
"Childbirth."
A nervous giggle left her lips. "I'm not following you. Perhaps you should come right out and tell me what arrangement you're alluding to."
The seconds ticked away on the mantle clock, sounding like a thousand crickets had breached the room. "Yes, I'm trying to get to the point of all this." He stopped pacing and held onto the back of his chair. "Here's the way of it. You need to earn enough money to return your grandfather in Maine. I, on the other hand, need a son.”
Her brow furrowed.
“I'm offering you freedom in the long run. In exchange, I want to have a child with you, preferably, a male.” The words rushed forth. “However, if you’re delivered of a female, I’ll love and accept her just the same.”
An audible gasp fell from her lips. "Oh, but I can’t possibly accept a proposal of marriage from a virtual stranger. It would be most unfair to both―”
Good, God, she thinks Im offering marriage? Marriage? “No, that is, you misunderstood my proposal. I’m not suggesting we marry.”
Her eyes widened and darted about the room.
Walking to the table with a tentative gait, he picked up the envelope. “More money than you could earn in a lifetime is in here. I'm offering half now and the other half when the contract has been met."
She looked at the envelope and then at him, her tone icy. “How much is in the envelope?"
"Five thousand dollars."
Another gasp.
"Five thousand now and five thousand the day the child is born." Tossing the envelope on the table for effect, he continued. "It's yours right now should you accept my offer." A rapid pulse took flight in a tiny blue vein in her neck.
"If you're not offering marriage, in what capacity will I live in the manor?"
"You'll be free to go home after the child is born. Until then, you'll have complete freedom to do whatever you choose."
Her eyes narrowed, and sparked.
"You said you wished to return to your grandfather one day. That day can be sooner than you think if you sign the contract my barrister drafted." He nodded toward the envelope. "It's also in there."
Her face paled. "Horace Masterson, the kindly gentleman who promised me safety until I returned to Maine?"
"Yes, the money guarantees your security, and your safety.” Walking around the chair, he settled into it and leaned forward. “At the very least, read the contract. I'm sure you'll agree the terms protect you.”
Her lower lip quivered, and he wondered if she might cry. Christ, what would he do if she launched into a crying jag? He couldn't bear up under her tears.
"You seem quite well prepared.” Her gaze took him apart inch by inch. "I commend your valiant efforts to keep your father's threats at bay."
"I can’t find fault with your reaction at the onset, but surely you see the practicality on both sides?” After drawing in a lungful of air, he added, “You’ll be free to go about your life when it’s over in a manner envied by most women. I’ll acquire an heir to Stafford House, and my father will end his relentless pursuit.”
“Oh, please enlighten me." She pinned him with a lethal glare. "Should I decide to engage in your well-contrived scheme, how do you propose we bring the end result to fruition?"
"It's quite simple,” he said, aware the temperature in the room rose to an unbearable degree. "You spend three nights in my bedchamber, the specific nights will be chosen by Madam Seren. She’s prepared―”
“Madam who?”
“Seren, a healer, a woman who dabbles in tonics, remedies. She’s already prepared several concoctions.” He dug for the instructions in the pocket of his vest. “You must follow her recommendations when it comes to diet and tinctures for several weeks. She’s highly skilled, claims certain remedies will enhance the possibility of producing a male child. I'll expect you to follow her recommendations if you accept my offer.”
She shook her head. "I must applaud your tenacity and the immense preparation expended to carry out your duplicitous plot."
“There is nothing duplicitous about this. I’ve told you everything there is to know.”
She looked away from him, but not before he saw the sadness return to her eyes again, and something he didn’t recognize. Indecision? Hatred? An interminable amount of time passed before he dared speak again. “Think of it as a business arrangement."
She turned to him with a look that said she'd love to sever him at the knees with a giant scythe.
"I’d like your decision in two days. You’ll find me in my study two nights from now. If you decline, you can remain at Stafford House until you’ve earned enough money to return to Maine. Do you have any questions?"
"Yes," she said with calm composure. "Why me? There must be countless women who’d agree to bear your child.”
"I thought I made that clear. You possess undeniable beauty, have obviously been well-educated, and you have the physical attributes, height and stature, I hope are passed on to our child.” He shrugged. "It's that simple."
Flushed with anger, the green eyes darkened. "Will that be all?"
"Yes," he replied, finding it difficult to look at her. "Unless you have additional questions."
"I do not." She rose from the chair, her tone distant and cold. "I believe I understand perfectly well.” Offering a false curtsy, she added, "If you'll excuse me, sir."
He nodded.
The moment her footsteps faded from the room, Derek unfurled himself from the chair and headed for the liquor cabinet, his only thought to down a double dram.

Review from Beautiful Reads:
5 out of 5 stars

"I applaud Raine for her strength in the face of her parents’ deaths, especially during a time where women were seen as needing constant protection. Her determination not to accept Derek’s charity was admirable, as was her willingness to tackle any job she was assigned. Although she was a strong woman, her gentleness was demonstrated in her concern for the spirit and her attempts to understand its message.

The contrasts within the family were quite believable, and the characters were well developed and realistic, though not always likable. This story has everything and then some – romance, birth, death, voodoo, adventure, psychic ability, and a touch of Civil War – and I could not put it down. Keta Diablo has once again done a wonderful job of involving the reader in the lives of her characters, and I highly recommend this book."

Mistaken Bride by Regan Taylor

I'm so excited to have Mistaken Bride, book 2 of my Bride series, up for discussion. What a fun way to wind up Valentine's day 2011!

In Indentured Bride, book 1 Jenna Matthews flees Virginia and joins up with a wagon train that it's participants call the "Bride Train" because of a group of mail order brides on their way to Adler Creek, Wyoming. Jenna plans to ditch the group of women as soon as she can, but her plan goes awry and she soon finds herself walking down the aisle with deputy sheriff, Brett Parker. Brett  has his own set of secrets which may ultimately destroy their relationship.

In book 2, Brett's older brother, Kendrick, is on his way to Wyoming with the information that could save Jenna's life. When he arrives in St. Louis he comes upon one of the most notorious bank robbers of all time, Black Bette. Taking her into custody with plans to bring her to San Francisco to stand trial, Kendrick soon realizes he has his hands full -- with the right woman. Or is she?

Indentured Bride was originally intended to be a stand alone book until I caught glimpses of Kendrick and his life. He's a man of his time, but even then, he stands on the crevase of two worlds. On the one hand he is an urbane Washingtonian, an attorney and at the same time a United States Marshal. On the other, he has loved his time in rugged Wyoming of the 1860's. Women flock to the good looking lawman, but nothing much about them appeals to him. The simpering misses don't see him as a man, just someone to get their MRS. from. When he meets the woman he is certain is Black Bette his world is turned upside down. Suddenly all the rules he's lived by are turned around.  I loved writing him and getting to know him.

Bette, has a bit of me inside of her -- her love of language. You'll see what I mean when you read Mistaken Bride.

If you aren't a fan of, or haven't read westerns, in many ways, while in the historical western romance genre, the characters could, I feel, exist in any time and any place. They just happen to live in the 1860's.

Mistaken Bride is available from (among other venues) Awe-struck (http://www.awe-struck.net/), All Romance Ebooks (http://www.allromanceebooks.com/)  and Smashwords (pdf-ebooks.net/sample/40260/mistaken-bride); Mobi-pocket (http://www.mobipocket.com/en/eBooks/eBookDetails.asp?BookID=390486)

Elfin Blood by Gracen Miller

BLURB:

Scorned by her own kind for her half-breed elf status, Julija lives a lonely existence among her Ivory Elf kin. She is the only one the elves can trust when a magical book in elf lore is stolen. Relegated to steal the Book from the vampire thief, Landau Jamieson, she's surprised to discover he has the ability to walk in daylight. Refusing to be deterred by developing setbacks, she’s committed to executing the heist for an Ivory King who grows more desperate to possess the Book. Nothing about the vampire is as it appears and Julija begins to doubt her mission. Worse, she begins to worry she won't have the strength to guard her heart from her sworn enemy.

Landau is fascinated by the elf stalking him and baffled by the potent hunger she elicits after ten thousand years of celibacy. Soon he discovers the lovely sprite is a pawn in a dangerous game--orchestrated by none other than a reviled enemy from his past. While blind-sided by her beauty and her magical powers, the least of which is the spell she casts on his heart, the sinister plot unfolds. What started out as folly to catch a thief, blossoms into a love that casts aside bloodlines and forges all boundaries.

EXCERPT:

Chapter One

Julija squinted against the sun’s harsh rays. Not even her darkly tinted sunglasses entirely cut the glare. The frames slid down her sweat-slick nose. She pushed them back up and looked around, her impatience rising. For the fifth time in as many minutes, she glanced at her watch. Two minutes left. She resettled her gaze on the odd looking house across the street.

The structure looked more like a fortress than an actual home and gave her the creeps. It was too gothic, too dark, and contrary to her light-imbued life. Made from slate, the house reached high into the sky like a castle with its domed ceilings. Gargoyles carved from stone rested above the windows, as if offering protection from demonic entities. With a vampire in residence, perhaps they did.

She shuddered to think of it as a home, but the richest, most powerful man in the city of Veil—Landau Jamieson the IV or V or something along that order—considered it such. The man was the sole reason she stood here, or rather the vampire disguised as a man was the sole reason. Ironically the city’s residents considered him royalty. Hell, more like Batman of Gotham in these parts.

Priceless. Absolutely priceless. For no other purpose other than to make herself feel good, Julija rolled her eyes beneath the thick shades.

The vampire had stolen the Ivory Elfin Book of Lore. The ancient tome detailing every creature in existence, including the fey, had been entrusted to the Elves at the dawn of creation. Whoever possessed the book also possessed great knowledge, expertise that could be dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands. Ownership of the book also ensured great power, power she could not allow a vampire to keep.

For a week now, Julija had watched him and tried to gauge the best time to strike. Failure was not an option for the best thief among the Elves. Secretly, she was proud of her talent; it had served her people well. Elves were renowned for their light step, and it just so happened her fingers were stickier than most of her kind.

Security systems could not deter her; she possessed enough magic to nix the best system in the world.

She would retrieve the book, once she figured out how to bypass the perceptive vampire and his minions. One thing still puzzled her—how had the vampire stolen it to begin with when only Elf Royals were allowed to touch it? Another dilemma for her since she was not an Elf Royal.

Her best chance to retrieve it would be in two days when the vampire attended the depot dedication of Veil's newly renovated train station. Feeling melodramatic about the event, she rolled her eyes again. How humans loved to waste money. The homeless lived near the train station, beneath the bridges in cardboard boxes. Died there too, while the station went through elaborate renovations for the wealthy and elite.

Julija glanced at her watch again as the black limousine rolled to a halt in front of the vampire’s home. Like clockwork, the man left for work every day at precisely the same time. Talk about being a creature of habit!

The vampire in question strode about as blatant as he pleased in daylight. Daylight! Vampires and daylight mixed like metal and acid. Daylight and acid were supposed to vaporize vampires and metal, but apparently not so with this vampire.

Every cocky step he took reeked arrogance. While she pondered how he managed to keep from melting beneath the sunlight, he lifted his head. Their gazes locked.

Cool as ice, and trained for confrontations, she returned his gaze. While not the most skilled fighter, she possessed some ability in that area.

Landau’s stylishly cut, dark blonde hair gleamed like gold beneath the bright sun. The man was tall, broad shouldered, and athletically built. The charcoal gray business suit, tailored precisely to fit his frame, bespoke wealth—not money, but wealth. Even from this distance, he oozed pheromones and drew her like an addictive narcotic. That could be dangerous for her elfin libido—inordinately high in comparison to other fey creatures.

The vampire tossed her a crooked grin before sliding into the back seat, leaving little question in her mind he’d spotted her. Unmoving, she watched as the limo pulled away.

Perfect. He knows he's being watched.

Although gone from the residence, unfortunately that didn’t mean Landau left his home unguarded. Oh, no, nothing could be that easy.

Flagrant to her elfin eyes, his home embodied magic. Translated, that meant he’d opened the Ivory Elfin Book of Lore and was, in fact, utilizing the spells in the book. In all likelihood he’d used the same witchery to protect himself from the glaring sun.

Because of this, she’d have to kill him once she had the book in her possession again.

* * * * *

Landau adjusted the black sunglasses on his face and glanced out the limousine window.

The woman on the bench appealed to him with her pale, almost white, blonde hair. Through her thick shades he’d assessed her eyes to be pale blue with barely a hint of color, rather albino in nature. Her milky white complexion had looked softer than satin. He wondered how such delicate skin would bruise.

But she had an agenda. Either she was a reporter—not likely—or up to no good. Bingo! Landau couldn’t wait to find out the no good part. A long time had passed since he’d enjoyed himself.

Although he’d tried, he couldn’t read her mind. She possessed one of few human minds he couldn’t penetrate. Or she wasn’t human. The phenomena lent her an air of mystery. Even though he couldn't glean her thoughts, he knew her mind worked at top speed, planning, scheming, and devising until a perfect little blueprint had been mapped out in her mind. Her eyes were too shrewd to suggest otherwise.

He’d tossed her a snarky little grin before entering the limo, just to let her know he knew she was stalking him. That should leave give her something to think about. He chuckled then addressed his bodyguard. “Find out who she is.”

“Immediately,” Edward, an Abecedarian—a fledgling, in human terms—agreed and then tipped his nose in the air and sniffed as if in disdain over being assigned such a menial task.
